Mr. Pu Tien-Sheng was already 77 years of age when he created The Sports Series, which is widely believed to represent the culmination of Pu’s artistic career.

The Sports Series was inspred by the gymnastics competitions at the Seoul Olympic Games in 1988.The works in this series celebrate the power and beauty of the human body as they capture the moments when the gymnasts reach their ultimate physical limits.Pu had made a technical breakthrough in 1981 through his works Dream and Swimming ,and seven years later, in 1988,when he was 77,he made another breakthrough in terms of representing movement. He kind of vital line with rhythmic, wavelike movement , passes on just like this”Pu successfully captured and froze the instants in the movements of these lines.

We may compare and conteast these works with Pu’s earlier sculptures. The center of human figure is no longer the center of gravity of the sculptural work itself, but rather the energy of the human body in a gymnastics exercise are a kind of beauty , just as the extreme lines of wild cursive script in calligraphy are a kind of beauty . Both express the beauty of line.

Wine culture which comes from Dionysus in Greek mythology and Baccus in Roman mythology is an important culture conception in western culture. It is a romantic human life. When sensibility is Liberated from sense, Mania, Inebriation and Joy let soul to be freedom and promotion as superb wine which is fermented and settled. They only focus on the body of Dionysus or Baccus on the sculpture in ancient Greek and Roman. Mr. Pu Tian-Sheng’s works on sport are to describe the spirit of Dionysus or Baccus. These ten works are in the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts in 1994 and in the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts in 1995.
